Supreme Court Directs Action Against Striking Lawyers, Bar Officials
The Supreme Court has expressed strong displeasure over lawyers staying away from work and has directed the High Court to take action against the office bearers of the Bar Association. Specifically, the apex court has instructed a committee of the Allahabad High Court to initiate proceedings against the Bar Association office bearers who abstained from work in the Noida court. This directive comes in response to repeated strikes observed in the Gautam Buddha Nagar District Court.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant and Justice Joimalya Bagchi issued the order while hearing an application filed by Virendra Singh. The Supreme Court seriously noted that despite its clear prohibition in December 2024 against district bar associations abstaining from work, the Gautam Buddha Nagar Bar Association has consistently made such decisions. Chief Justice Suryakant highlighted that the association's president has repeatedly disregarded court directives.
While the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court had already formed a three-member committee to review the matter, the Supreme Court bench emphasized the need for swift action. The bench ordered the District and Sessions Judge of Gautam Buddha Nagar to send detailed reports to the High Court's Registrar General regarding the days when bar members abstained from work. Furthermore, the court instructed the Allahabad High Court's committee to immediately review this report and take punitive measures against the office bearers who failed to comply with the judicial order, in line with its December 2024 judgment.
