Karnataka High Court Greenlights Doctor's Criminal Trial in Nurse Suicide

Karnataka High Court Greenlights Doctor's Criminal Trial in Nurse Suicide The Karnataka High Court has given its approval for the trial of a criminal case against a doctor involved in an alleged affair with a nurse and an anesthesiologist. However, the High Court simultaneously issued a stay on the proceedings against the anesthesiologist in the same case. This decision comes after a nurse reportedly died by suicide, leaving behind a death note that implicated both the doctor and the anesthesiologist. Following the nurse's death, an FIR was registered against the doctor and the anesthesiologist at Puttenahalli Police Station in J.P. Nagar, based on the contents of the suicide note. The 30th Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court had subsequently set a date for the commencement of the trial. A 33-year-old anesthesiologist from Jorhat district, Assam, then filed a writ petition with the Karnataka High Court, seeking to quash the proceedings against her. The court observed that the nurse committed suicide after discovering the illicit relationship between the accused doctor and the anesthesiologist. However, the bench noted that the anesthesiologist's role in the incident appeared limited. The court stated, "Apart from the sole accusation that the expert had an illicit relationship with the doctor, no other role of hers is visible. Therefore, the proceedings of the subordinate court against the applicant are being stayed."
