Karnataka High Court Displeased with Police Focus on Couples

Karnataka High Court Displeased with Police Focus on Couples The Karnataka High Court has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the police's operational priorities, stating that officers are spending too much time observing live-in couples and lovers in parks, while showing a lack of interest in investigating genuine criminal cases. This criticism came from a bench led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, who orally satirized the police's approach, remarking that "Karnataka police are so powerful that they go after live-in couples, tree-hugging lovers, and married couples, but no one is investigating real crimes." The judge's comments were made during the hearing of a petition filed by Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, who sought to quash a case concerning alleged disrespect to a divine character in the movie 'Kantara'. During the proceedings, senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Ranveer Singh, raised concerns about security for the actor's visit to Chamundi Hills. When the complainant's advocate, C.G. Malayal, tried to interject, asserting that "Karnataka police are powerful and provide protection," the bench sharply interrupted. Justice Nagaprasanna reiterated, "Just a minute, Karnataka police are so powerful that they go after live-in relationships and couples. No one is investigating real crimes; everyone only investigates offenses under BNS Section 69 (crimes related to sexual exploitation under the pretext of marriage)."
